Sum of Success, the undefeated two-time stakes winner, will miss the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland next month after a recent illness.
Trainer Bobby Dibona said on Monday that Sum of Success has recovered and resumed training, but that races at Gulfstream Park in November will be a goal.
“He got sick after the last race,” Dibona said. Monday “was his first day back in training.
“I just had to take care of him.”
Sum of Success has won three times, all on dirt – a maiden race at five furlongs by 7 1/2 lengths on July 20, the $100,000 In Summation Stakes for Florida-breds by 11 1/2 lengths at six furlongs on Aug. 11, and the $150,000 Express Tour Stakes at seven furlongs by 5 1/4 lengths on Sept. 5.
Sum of Success has led throughout each of his wins.
Dibona said Sum of Success will be considered for the $100,000 Juvenile Sprint at six furlongs against open company at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 14, or races later in the year.
Eventually, Dibona is eager to try Sum of Success at longer distances.
“I want to see if he can handle more ground,” Dibona said.
“He’s done more than most 2-year-olds. He’s already won three times and two stakes.
“He’s an amazing horse.”
By Win Win Win, Sum of Success is owned by Keith Johnston, Michael and Jules Iavarone, and Hopeless Stables. Purchased for $165,000 at the Ocala Breeders Sale of 2-year-olds in-training in April, Sum of Success has earned $188,400.
