Uncontrollable seeks big return on investment in Generous Portion Stakes
DEL MAR, Calif. - The Generous Portion Stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar on Monday has a purse of $125,000.
Owner Michael Repole paid a $25,000 supplemental fee to make Uncontrollable eligible for the six-furlong race as well as the Golden State series, a lengthy list of stakes for statebreds at tracks statewide for the remainder of the filly’s career.
The stout supplemental fee will seem like a sound investment if Uncontrollable has a lengthy career. Most horses are nominated to the Golden State series for $300 in February of their 2-year-old seasons. That did not occur with Uncontrollable, who was bred by Fountain of Youth Breeding, LLC.
“I guess it slipped through the cracks,” trainer Michael McCarthy said over the weekend.
Uncontrollable won her debut by two lengths in a maiden special weight race for statebreds at five furlongs on July 22. The style of that win alone justifies the expensive supplemental fee.

Uncontrollable has had four workouts since her maiden-race win, leaving McCarthy hopeful the filly can show improvement from her debut when she was bumped at the start and raced wide before unleashing a sharp rally.
“It looks like the spot to run her,” McCarthy said. “She’s very straightforward and came back with a couple of nice works.”
Uncontrollable has been sold at auction twice – as a yearling for $20,000 in Kentucky and for $130,000 by Repole at a 2-year-olds in-training sale in Florida in April
By Upstart, Uncontrollable is part of a field of eight in the Generous Portion Stakes, and is the 3-1 third choice on the morning line behind the maiden race winner Big Hopes (2-1) and the undefeated Chismosa (5-2). Chismosa is the only stakes winner in the field, having won the CTBA Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 7.
For the Generous Portion Stakes, Uncontrollable will be ridden by Joe Bravo, a replacement for leading rider Juan Hernandez, who is aboard Big Hopes. Hernandez rode Big Hopes to a win in a maiden special weight race on Aug. 13 in her lone start.
The winner’s share of the Generous Portion Stakes is $71,250, which would be a handsome return on Repole’s investment.
Later this year, the Golden State series continues with two additional stakes for statebred 2-year-old fillies – the $150,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Oct. 29 and the $100,000 Soviet Problem Stakes at a mile at Los Alamitos in December.
