Unbridled Elaine romps

Dave Basler|Jul 06, 2001

ALTOONA, Iowa - Unbridled Elaine drew off to a convincing 8 3/4-length victory over Supreme Song in the $150,000 Iowa Oaks at 1 1/16 miles at Prairie Meadows Thursday night.

Unbridled Elaine ($2.60) settled in fourth position early under patient handling from Pat Day, as the previously undefeated Dancin Emi set the pace through a half mile in 47.06 seconds.

Day guided Unbridled Elaine four wide entering the second turn and the filly cruised up to collar Dancin Emi entering the stretch. The result wasn't in question thereafter, as Unbridled Elaine widened through the lane with Day riding her out to the wire. Unbridled Elaine ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.88.

The 67-1 shot Supreme Song received a good stalking trip under Perry Compton to finish second, 2 3/4 clear of Sharky's Review who was third.

The victory was Unbridled Elaine's fourth in six career starts and sent her earnings to $238,090 for owner Roger Devenport. The Oaks marked Unbridled Elaine's first start for trainer David Vance after Devenport transferred the filly to Vance from trainer Dallas Stewart after her fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont last month.

Thursday's co-featured $79,900 Cyclones Stakes for Iowa-breds at 1 1/16 miles became a wide-open betting proposition when Sure Shot Biscuit, who will run in Saturday's Grade 3 Cornhusker Breeders' Cup Handicap, was scratched. Elodare ($28.60), the longest shot in the six-horse field, rallied from last on the final turn under jockey Glenn Corbett to score a 1 1/4-length victory over Elvis Rocks.

The victory was Elodare's seventh in 29 career starts, and sent his earnings over the $190,000 mark. Don Von Hemel trains the winner for owner Holm Thoroughbred Company.
