Unbridled Bomber will wait for Queens County for next stakes

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Having watched Unbridled Bomber put in two solid efforts in succession, trainer Jim Ryerson said he won’t mess with what’s been working. Meaning, he won’t wheel the 3-year-old back in the $150,000 Discovery Stakes here on Nov. 27, but instead will wait to return him to stakes company in the $150,000 Queens County at Aqueduct on Dec. 31.
Though it means running against older horses, the 49 days between Saturday’s allowance win and the Queens County is more attractive to Ryerson than wheeling Unbridled Bomber back in two weeks to face only 3-year-olds in the Discovery.
“With him, it’s kind of been working so we’re going to try and go with it,” Ryerson said of spacing out Unbridled Bomber’s races.
When Unbridled Bomber won his maiden in fall 2021, it came 44 days after his previous start. On Saturday, Unbridled Bomber won a second-level allowance by 4 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct 44 days after his first-level allowance win, which also came by the same margin. Unbridled Bomber on Saturday also duplicated the 94 Beyer Speed Figure he earned winning here on Sept. 29.

“It took him so long to do it right the one time, now it was a question could he do it again?” Ryerson said. “Then to have it be a paceless race and last year him running off in races like that … I was just very happy with how he relaxed. That was the most gratifying thing I take from the race.”
Unbridled Bomber, a son of Upstart, is now 3 for 13. Earlier this year, he finished fourth in the Jerome, 10th in the Grade 3 Withers and a well-beaten fourth in the Grade 3 Dwyer.
Ryerson is part owner of the horse along with Edward Potash and Brad Yankanich.
