Unbeaten duo Fly On The Night and Venecia Style meet in Robert Papin
Fly On The Night risks her unbeaten record in Sunday’s $143,000 Prix Robert Papin at 5 1/2 furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse, one of the first major stakes of the year for 2-year-olds in France.
Trained by Attilio Giorgi, Fly On The Night won twice in Italy before winning her French debut in the Group 3 Prix de Bois at five furlongs at Chantilly on June 29.
In the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin, Fly On The Night is one of three fillies in a field of eight that includes the filly Venecia Style, who is also unbeaten in three starts. Trained by Phillipe Sogorb, Venecia Style won the minor Prix La Fleche at five furlongs at Chantilly on June 6.
The fillies in the Prix Robert Papin seem a strong group. Yakaba, a filly by Medicean, will have her stakes debut after winning a maiden race at Maisons-Laffitte on July 5 for trainer Freddy Head.
The Prix Robert Papin field has an British influence. Areen, a Kevin Ryan-trained Irish colt, was second in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 16, but only sixth in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket on July 9. Gutaifan, an Irish-bred colt by Dark Angel, will have his stakes debut after wins at Salisbury and Chester.
Magic Artist heads Bayerisches-Zuchtrennen Stakes
Magic Artist, fifth in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park on June 6, is part of a modest field of 10 in Sunday’s $170,000 Bayerisches-Zuchtrennen Stakes at Munich, Germany. The Group 1 race is run at 1 1/4 miles on turf.
Magic Artist was second in the Group 1 Premio Presidente Della Repubblica in Italy in May before the journey to New York. Sunday’s field also includes Air Pilot, winner of the Group 3 International Stakes at The Curragh in Ireland on June 28, and Nordico, the winner of a Group 3 at Dortmund, Germany, on June 21.
