Is unbeaten Argentine filly Sobradora Inc good enough for Breeders' Cup?
Sobradora Inc, unbeaten in four starts in Argentina in 2015, will make her American debut in Sunday’s $75,000 Osunitas Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar. The minor stakes could put Sobradora Inc on course for the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita in November.
The 4-year-old Sobradora Inc has won three stakes, including consecutive Group 1 races at 1 1/4 miles on turf in Argentina last November and December. She has not raced this year.
The Osunitas distance of 1 1/16 miles on turf is a slight concern for trainer Simon Callaghan, who said Sobradora Inc may be a prospect for the BC Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 5.
“I think there is a chance,” he said of the Breeders’ Cup. “I think even at this shorter distance we’ll find out something.
“I think it’s the minimum distance for her to be running.”
Sobradora Inc, by Include, has worked steadily since early May, including two workouts on turf at Del Mar in late July. She joined Callaghan’s stable this year. Sobradora Inc races for Katsumi Yoshida, who acquired the filly following a win in the Group 1 Copa de Plata for fillies and mares last December.
On Sunday, Rafael Bejarano has the mount on Sobradora Inc, who is part of a field of eight. The race is restricted to nonwinners of a stakes worth $50,000 or more to the winner at a mile or farther this year other than statebred races.
“She’s ready,” Callaghan said. “We’ve been happy with her. She does seem like she’ll be better when we stretch her out.”
Callaghan said that if Sobradora Inc runs well, she could start in the $200,000 John C. Mabee Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf here Sept. 4. Another option is the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita in early October.
