Umphrey in critical condition

Calder racing secretary Bob Umphrey was listed in critical condition Monday at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., after suffering a massive heart attack at his home on Sunday evening.

Umphrey, 53, is a south Florida native and the son of former trainer Gene Umphrey. He has served as racing secretary at Calder since 1993 after working in similar capacities at Laurel, Timonium, Arlington Park, Hollywood Park, Gulfstream, and Golden Gate Fields.

Umphrey helped design such popular Calder events as the Juvenile Showcase and Grand Slam series and has also been instrumental in elevating Calder's Summit of Speed into one of the premier racing days on the national calendar.
