Ultimate ($50.80) notches upset in Iowa Sprint

National Treasure’s half-brother Ultimate ran the race of his career Friday night at Prairie Meadows, where he won the $100,000 Iowa Sprint over 1-5 favorite Strobe to earn a Beyer Speed Figure of 102.
The six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up was one of four stakes on the card. The races were worth a cumulative $400,000 and are part of the Iowa Racing Festival that continues Saturday night with the Cornhusker, Iowa Derby and Iowa Oaks.
Ultimate ($50.80) and National Treasure, who won this year’s Preakness, are both out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Treasure. Ultimate sat off contested fractions of 22.03 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.92 for the half-mile before going on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:09.15.
Ramsey Zimmerman was aboard Ultimate for trainer Tim Martin. The horse won by 1 3/4 lengths over Strobe, who was coming off a third-place finish to champion Elite Power in the Grade 2 True North at Belmont Park.
Ultimate is a son of Speightstown and was winning the first stakes of his career in the Iowa Sprint. He is now 8 for 29 for earnings of $362,556. The 5-year-old races for Heath Aaron Campbell and Sheena Campbell.
Yuugiri ($6.20) won the card’s sprint offering for fillies and mares, when she led throughout to capture the $100,000 Saylorville by 3 1/4 lengths over Bluefield.
Yuugiri set fractions of 22.41 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.43 for the half-mile before covering six furlongs in 1:10.29. She earned a Beyer of 86.
Ricardo Santana Jr. was aboard for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. The daughter of Shackleford races for her breeders, Sekie and Tsunebumi Yoshihara.
Santana won a second stakes on the card when he guided Tx Women for Arts to a head victory over Crown Imperial in the $100,000 Prairie Gold Lassie. The winner was always prominent, and covered 5 1/2 furlongs for 2-year-old fillies in 1:05.41. She earned a Beyer of 63.
Tx Women for Arts ($7.60) is a daughter of Practical Joke owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison. She is trained by Steve Asmussen. Tx Women for Arts has now won her last two starts and overall is 2 for 3 for earnings of $81,527.
Coastal Charm ($6.80) moved back to dirt and back into the winner’s circle in the $100,000 Iowa Distaff. She controlled the pace through fractions of 25.02 seconds for the opening quarter, 49.89 for the half-mile and 1:14.68 for six furlongs before winning the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares in 1:44.83.
Coastal Charm won by 2 3/4 lengths over Ice Orchid.
Martin Garcia rode the winner for HWL Partnership and trainer Steve Hobby.
Coastal Charm, who came into the race off a start on turf, is by Ghostzapper. She earned a career-high Beyer of 87.
