ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Favored Tyson established himself as the leading older router on Tapeta at Woodbine with a handy score under Rafael Hernandez in Saturday’s Grade 2 Seagram Cup.
Tyson ($2.90) went straight to the lead and set slow fractions as Carrothers joined up front mid-way on the backstretch in the 1 1/16-mile event. The twosome duked it out until around the eighth pole, where Tyson began to draw off on his left lead en route to a three-length tally, in a time of 1:43.26.
Carrothers held off a closing Artie’s Storm by a half-length to secure second. Clear Destination, Kingmax, and Seventyseven Stone completed the order of finish on a race with no show wagering.
A son of Tapit trained by Josie Carroll, Tyson banked $105,000 of the $178,850 purse for the partnership of Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings (John Sikura) and Stretch Run Ventures.
“It’s one of our best pedigrees, one that we’ve cultivated for more than 30 years,” Sikura said. “I have a great admiration for Mike Tyson. I thought this was a special horse, and I wanted to name him Tyson. He’s a wonderful horse, beautifully bred. It looks like he’s going to be champion.”
