ARCADIA, Calif. – Two Rivers Over, winner of the Group 2 Godolphin Mile on dirt in Dubai in March, will resume his 2024 season in the Grade 3 Steve Sexton Mile on May 27 at Lone Star Park, co-owner Ty Leatherman said Sunday. Two Rivers Over was being considered for the Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile Handicap on June 8 at Saratoga, but Leatherman said the $400,000 Sexton Mile has greater appeal from a competitive standpoint. “He might be 4- or 5-1 at Lone Star, and he might be 10- or 12-1 in the Met Mile,” Leatherman said. “He’s a gelding. If he was a colt, we might consider” the Met Mile. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports The $1 million Met Mile is the nation’s leading springtime race for milers on dirt. Leatherman co-owns Two Rivers Over with Todd Cady. Trained by Doug O’Neill, Two Rivers Over has earned $845,697 since being claimed for $30,000 by Leatherman and Cady last June at Ellis Park. Two Rivers Over won the $300,000 Zia Park Derby in New Mexico last fall. Leatherman was in the winner’s circle at Santa Anita on Sunday after Timty ($4.60) held off a late surge from 5-2 Ivan the Great to win his debut by a nose in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race for 2-year-olds. Timty, co-owned by Tim Kasparoff and trained by Luis Mendez, dueled with 8-5 Soi Ngern before taking a one-length lead in the stretch. Timty was ridden by Edwin Maldonado and was timed in 53.09 seconds, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 55. O’Neill trains Ivan the Great for Mark Davis. A California-bred gelding by Stanford, Timty was purchased for $23,000 as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale last fall. Leatherman said Timty may not race again until Del Mar. The first stakes for 2-year-old California-breds in Southern California this year is the $100,000 Graduation Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 9 at Del Mar. The first stakes for the age group in California this year is the $75,000 Everett Nevin Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on July 7 at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton. On Friday, Night Beacon led throughout a maiden race for 2-year-old fillies going 4 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita, finishing in 52.30 seconds. Trained by Ryan Hanson for WSS Racing, Night Beacon earned a sharp Beyer Speed Figure of 76. Sent off as the 9-10 favorite, Night Beacon lead throughout to win by 2 3/4 lengths under jockey Emily Ellingwood, who has worked closely with Hanson in recent months on the filly’s development. “She was very professional from post parade and all throughout the race,” Ellingwood reflected Sunday. “It was a long post parade, and she handled it well. She didn’t need a pony. She was a happy camper hanging out by herself.” Night Beacon started from the inside in a field of five and was quickly in front. “She knew it was game time,” Ellingwood said. “She didn’t look back.” Purchased for $45,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in January 2023, the Kentucky-bred Night Beacon is the first winner by Spun to Run, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita in 2019 in an 8-1 upset.  Hanson said Sunday that Night Beacon’s next start will be at Del Mar.  At Del Mar this summer, there are two graded stakes for 2-year-old fillies – the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 10 and the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 7. Hanson’s stable is off to a fine start with juveniles, having won a maiden race on May 3 with the California-bred filly Broadway Venus. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
