Two of D'Angelo's Breeders' Cup horses to work Sunday

Coady Media Howard Wolowitz wins the Grade 1 Franklin-Simpson at Kentucky Downs. The 3-year-old will work at Palm Meadows for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Sunday.

Grade 1 winner Howard Wolowitz and Gulfstream Park stakes winner Gabaldon are both scheduled to work at Palm Meadows on Sunday in preparation for Breeders’ Cup races, according to trainer Jose D’Angelo.

The horses are among three runners D’Angelo is pointing to the championship series at Del Mar. He said Bentornato, who won the Grade 2 Gallant Bob last Saturday at Parx Racing, is targeting the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 2.

Howard Wolowitz is on deck for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 2, D’Angelo said Tuesday. The 3-year-old became a millionaire on Sept. 7 when he won the Grade 1 Franklin-Simpson at Kentucky Downs. The Sunday drill would be his first since the race.

Gabaldon is being pointed for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Nov. 1, said D’Angelo. He won the Royal Palm Juvenile in May at Gulfstream, then traveled to England and finished second by a length in the Windsor Castle Stakes during the Royal Ascot meet in June.

Bentornato was to arrive at Palm Meadows this week, D’Angelo said. The Gallant Bob was the horse’s second start since February, when he ran third in the Saudi Derby. Bentornato returned to action in August and was second in the Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town. He then took the Gallant Bob with a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 101.

“He came back well, so everything is looking like we are going to the Breeders’ Cup,” D’Angelo said. “That’s the plan.

“He ran his race. Also, you can see his chart, I worked him very strong for the Charles Town race because he came from the layoff, from Saudi. For this race, I was easy with him, just needed him to be happy and fresh, and he ran a huge race so I think he can improve even more.”

Shipping plans to Del Mar have not yet been determined.

“We’d like to arrive early over there,” D’Angelo said.

D’Angelo is based in South Florida, but also has some horses at Monmouth Park and a small string in Kentucky for the upcoming fall meet at Keeneland.
