Two Breeders' Cup qualifiers in South America on Sunday
Group stakes in Brazil and Peru on Sunday could produce runners for Breeders’ Cup races at Keeneland on Oct. 30-31.
In Brazil, Quinhao, the winner of the Group 1 Grande Prix Sao Paulo on May 3, is the leading contender against 16 rivals in the Group 1 Grande Premio Brasil at 1 1/2 miles on turf at Hipodromo de Gavea in Rio. The winner of the race receives a fees-paid berth for the BC Turf on Oct. 31, provided the horse is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program.
Quinhao’s primary rival is Famous Acteon, who beat Quinhao when they were first and second in the Group 1 Grande Premio Cruzeiro do Sul in March.
The Breeders’ Cup will waive the $60,000 entry fee for the winner of the Grande Premio Brasil and pay a $40,000 travel allowance, provided the winner is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program.
In Peru, there are nine runners in the Group 3 Clasico Cesar del Rio at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Hipodromo de Monterrico. The winner will receive a fees-paid berth for the BC Distaff on Oct. 30, provided the horse is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup.
The leading contenders are Shakita and Salama, who were first and second in the Clasico Portadora at 1 1/16 miles on May 10, and Broken Game, a winner of six of eight starts in her career.
