ELMONT, N.Y. – Twisted Ride will look to continue his streaking ways while Candy Man Rocket will try to bounce back from a last-place finish in his most recent start when they meet in Saturday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Runhappy Stakes at Belmont Park. The six-furlong Runhappy drew only six, but the race does appear to lack a clear favorite. Twisted Ride, based at Parx Racing with trainer Michael Moore, has won his last four starts, all at Parx and all on Lasix. Two of those wins came in listed stakes, including the Page McKenney going seven furlongs. Moore said he prefers the six furlongs for Twisted Ride. This will be Twisted Ride’s first race without the anti-bleeding medication Lasix. “Some horses seem to do better without it, certainly it’s a question mark,” Moore said. “We won’t really know until Saturday.” Moore attributes Twisted Ride’s recent run of success to just getting older. “He was a little immature as a younger horse,” Moore said. “He’s really game. When they come to him he keeps on trying.” Andy Hernandez rides Twisted Ride from post 3. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! He then threw in a clunker in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap, finishing last of 10 behind Skelly. “He got a little discouraged and backed up,” trainer Bill Mott said. “That race was loaded with speed – every horse in the race was on the lead every time they’ve run. Our guy doesn’t have to be on the lead, just a smooth trip will help him.” Junior Alvarado rides from post 4. Mr Phil came off an eight-month layoff to win an optional $80,000 claiming race by a neck over Stage Left, who came back to win the King Leatherbury Stakes on April 29 at Laurel Park. Rob Atras, who trains Mr Phil, indicated that performance may be better than it looks on paper. “I thought he was pretty fit but that track was really deep and tiring that day, so I think that took a toll on him,” Atras said. “I think he’ll move forward off that race.” Atras said he loves the outside draw for Mr Phil, who figures to on or near the lead under Manny Franco. Drafted, who won the Runhappy last year as one of his four 2022 stakes victories, looks to rebound off a sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Tom Fool last out. Jose Ortiz, aboard for two of Drafted’s four wins in 2022, is reunited with the 9-year-old gelding on Saturday. Beren is 2 for 2 at Belmont, both stakes wins coming in 2021. He finished third to Twisted Ride in the Page McKenney Handicap last out for trainer Butch Reid. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the call on Beren from post 2. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
