Twirling Candy breezes in preparation for Strub

ARCADIA, Calif.-Twirling Candy, who set a seven-furlong track record in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Santa Anita on Sunday.

The exercise, in company with the claimer Hammurabi, who was given the same time and the designation breezing, was the first work for Twirling Candy since the Malibu. Trainer John Sadler said that Twirling Candy missed four or five days of training in early January because of a bruised foot.

The trainer said Twirling Candy is likely to start in the $200,000 Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds over 1 1/8 miles on Feb. 5. Owned by Jenny Craig, Twirling Candy has won 5 of 6 starts and $459,900. In the Malibu Stakes, Twirling Candy ran seven furlongs in 1:19.70, lowering Spectacular Bid’s 1980 track record of 1:20.
