ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Canadian Triple Crown nominee Twin City nosed out the favored Irish-bred Wico to land the $116,000 King Corrie Stakes for 3-year-olds at Woodbine Sunday.
Sent off at 10-1 under Gary Boulanger, Twin City pressed Keen Flatter through slow splits in the seven-furlong sprint, as the Wesley Ward-trained Wico raced in third.
Wico made a wide bid on the turn to challenge Twin City for the lead entering the stretch and they dueled to the wire, where Twin City prevailed in a head bob, in a time of 1:23.02.
Keen Flatter weakened to third and Stayhonor Goodside rallied wide for fourth before galloping out on top. One for Chap, Classic Dancer, Velocitor and Dream Jereem completed the order of finish.
Twin City was making his first start since a troubled neck loss to Velocitor in the Nov. 6 Coronation Futurity, a 1 1/8-mile test for Canadian-bred juveniles.
“Him being that close to the pace didn’t concern me, because he’s so manageable and rateable,” Boulanger said. “He had a couple of unlucky races that he probably should have won. We finally got the photo to go our way.”
Trainer Stuart Simon said he has a tentative plan to get Twin City to the $1 million King’s Plate here Aug. 20.
“I mapped out a game plan,” Simon said. “We’ll see after this one where we go - it will definitely be two turns, and just go from there.”
Twin City ($23.10) earned $72,000 for owners Brent, Russell and Roy McLellan. Simon is also a co-owner of the gelded son of Klimt, who was bred by Frank DiGiulio Jr.
