Twelve Pack Shelly showed tremendous promise in her first start, romping to 10 3/4 length win in April at Laurel while earning a 95 Beyer Speed Figure. She has had some tough trips and mishaps since then, but the talent is starting to shine through. Twelve Park Shelly got her first stakes win Saturday, beating R Heat Lightning by one length in the $100,000 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park. The Colleen is the prep for the meet’s top event for 2-year-old fillies, the $100,000 Sorority Stakes on Labor Day. “She started out as a super-nice filly,” said trainer John Salzman, Jr. “We really thought she could run. She ran a 95 Beyer the first time and I was a little surprised. It took a little time, but she’s turning into a real nice horse.” Tomica’s Spirit and Twelve Pack Shelly hooked up in an early duel that the winner settled decisively by opening up a four-length lead in the lane. Harry Vega was aboard as Twelve Pack Shelly ($7) ran the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.16 on the fast track. Sleepless Dixie was third. * A Unique Treasure ($14.40) beat True to Tradition by 1 3/4 lengths in the $102,200 My Frenchman turf sprint.
