Turfway: Golden Oldie dominates
Golden Oldie dominated Saturday's $50,000 Dust Commander Stakes at Turfway Park, easily drawing off to a five-length victory under jockey Axel DaSilva.
Golden Oldie, a gray horse by Gold Legend, returned $6.20 as the favorite in a field of nine older horses. He completed the one-mile distance in 1:36.66 over a fast track.
Little Lee led early but was easily overtaken leaving the backstretch by Golden Oldie, who in his previous start finished a sharp second in the
6 1/2-furlong Forego Stakes despite rearing at the start. Golden Oldie was never threatened down the stretch as Mail Call, last early, rallied inside to finish second, 2 3/4 lengths before Winning Connection.
Mary Lou Cashman is the owner and David Asbury is the trainer of Golden Oldie, who now has won eight of 29 starts and just over $190,000. The Dust Commander, named for the 1970 Kentucky Derby winner, is his first stakes victory.
The 4-5 exacta paid $49.20.
