Turfway cancels Thursday's card

After consulting with jockeys and trainers, Turfway Park has cancelled live racing for Thursday night, Feb. 5 . The decision was made out of continuing concern for the condition of jockey Michael Rowland, who was injured in a three-horse spill at Turfway Park Wednesday night.

Wednesday's accident happened in the seventh race as the field was turning for home. Rowland, 40, a 24-year veteran rider, was the most seriously injured of three jockeys involved in the mishap. Jockey Mark T. Johnston, 33, also suffered a broken collarbone. Both riders were taken to nearby University Hospital. Rowland was in surgery Wednesday night. Johnston was listed in stable condition. The third rider, Jessica Endres, was bruised and shaken but otherwise unhurt.

Track officials cancelled the remaining two races on the Wednesday night card.
