Turf stakes next for More Than Most
More Than Most, a 7 1/4-length winner of the $75,000 fillies division of the Texas Stallion Stakes last Sunday at Lone Star Park, will be pointed to a turf stakes at the track, trainer Bret Calhoun said Wednesday. More Than Most is targeting the $50,000 Lane’s End Stallion Scholarship Stakes, a 7 1/2-furlong race for Texas-bred fillies and mares June 18.
“She seems to be pretty versatile as far as the surface goes,” Calhoun said. “We’ll have to run against older horses. I’m not too fond of that. But I like that it’s for Texas-breds.”
Calhoun trains More Than Most, who also is a stakes winner on turf, for Doug Scharbauer. Calhoun long has thought highly of the daughter of the A.P. Indy stallion Indygo Mountain. She won her division of the Stallion Stakes in 1:39.21, quicker than Texas Chrome’s time of 1:39.64 three races later. More Than Most earned a career-high 86 Beyer.
“It was a very powerful race,” Calhoun said. “She kind of got the trip she needed. I’m hoping that she’s learning and gaining confidence with every race.”
◗ Danny Pish is nearing a training milestone, an official with Lone Star said. Pish had 1,993 career Thoroughbred wins through Tuesday, according to records from Daily Racing Form.
