Turf renovation continues at Gulfstream
Gulfstream Park has made significant progress renovating the inside portion of its turf course the past several months, the track announced, as grass racing during the current summer meet continues to be conducted on the outer part of the 180-foot wide course.
The renovation concerns the inside 96 feet of the course. Glenn Ferguson, the track superintendent for Gulfstream, has resurfaced and aerated the course. There will have been no racing on the inside portion of the course for seven months by the time the track opens its championship meet Dec. 5.
As for the outer portion of the course, Ferguson will perform the same renovations when racing moves to Gulfstream Park West in October. From December through Aug. 23, there had been a total of 760 races conducted over the Gulfstream turf, with an average of 9.5 starters per race, according to Gulfstream statistics.
“The entire crew that works on the turf course has done a tremendous job with all the traffic on the course and the amount of races we have thrown at them,” P.J. Campo, general manager of Gulfstream, said in a release. “Along with all the work they’re doing at Gulfstream, the crew is also preparing the turf course at Gulfstream Park West for our October opening.”
Gulfstream’s summer meet will end on Oct. 3 with the final leg of the Florida Sire Stakes. Gulfstream Park West opens Oct. 7. Stall applications for Gulfstream’s championship meet, which opens Dec. 5, are due by Sept. 10. The application is available on Gulfstream’s website.
