Turf Paradise: Lewiston pulls 16-1 surprise in ATBA Fall Sales Stakes for colts and geldings

Michael Hammersly|Oct 20, 2012

PHOENIX – Lewiston continued his progress as the 2-year-old son of El Roblar posted a 16-1 upset in Saturday’s $76,851 colts and geldings division of the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association Fall Sales Stakes at Turf Paradise.

Youbetshewon bounced back from a dull try here a few weeks ago to capture the $91,414 filly division later on the card.

Owned and trained by Don Schell Lewiston pressed the early pace, moved up to duel with heavy favorite Gadsden Purchase going to the far turn in the six-furlong event, looked beat as that rival held a short lead into the lane but gamely kept to his task to push past that foe for the three-quarter-length win under Adolfo Morales. Gadsden Purchase, the 1-5 favorite, finished second, 5 1/2 lengths clear of third finisher Stormdriver in the field of nine

Lewiston ran the distance in 1:11.28 and paid $34.20. The winner’s share of $51,028 gives him earnings of $58,929 from 2 wins in 3 starts.

Youbetshewon, owned by Dan Brooks and trained by Tim Gleason, went right out to battle on the pace with Rock Those Hips in the filly division, started to edge away from that foe on the turn, and expanded her lead from there under Jorge Carreno, eventually romping home by 7 1/4 lengths as the 3-5 favorite. Rock Those Hips pressed the winner early but couldn’t keep up while holding second over Swiss Engagement in the field of nine.

Youbetshewon, a daughter of Ibetiwin, paid $3.40 and ran the distance in 1:11.89. The winner’s share of $52,730 gives her earnings of $92,292 from 4 wins in 7 starts.
