Az Ridge returns after more than seven months off in pursuit of a third straight win among a field of nine in the $35,000 Cactus Wren at Turf Paradise. The 6 1/2-furlong event for Arizona-breds ages 3 and up is one of four stakes on the Saturday card at the Phoenix track. Tribal Gal, the romping winner of the Princess of Palms here Oct. 12, looms as the heavy favorite in the $35,000 Cactus Flower, the 6 1/2-furlong sister race to the Cactus Wren, while Rockin Home and Deadly Black Eagle head the colts-and-geldings division of the $50,000 Arizona Breeders Futurity at six furlongs. Lazy Daisy May leads the field in the fillies’ division of the $50,000 Arizona Breeders Futurity at six furlongs later on the card. Az Ridge, owned by the Sawyer Cattle Co. and trained by Dan McFarlane, has posted all five of his wins over this track, including the Luke Kruytbosch last Dec. 31. He won allowance races here March 3 and April 7 before getting a vacation. He’s worked strongly for this, including two recent bullets. Kelly Bridges rides. Az Ridge’s main opposition might come from Jamaican Memories, who has knocked heads with the best sprinters on this circuit the past couple of seasons and easily won this race last year. ◗ The 3-year-old Tribal Gal looms as a heavy favorite in the Cactus Flower among a field of seven. Owned by John Pendergast and trained by Joseph Johnson, Tribal Gal faced some tough opposition in California before coming here for the Princess of Palms on Oct. 12. That day, she stalked the pace, took over going to the far turn, and drew off to win easily by 5 1/2 lengths. Runner-up Jaws n’ Paws (who came right back to win) was last year’s horse of the meet, and third finisher E Z Kitty won multiple stakes here last year and at Emerald Downs this year, so Tribal Gal beat a strong bunch. In her only other local start, Tribal Gal easily won the Joanne Dye on April 27. Juan Rivera rides Tribal Gal, who has posted two local bullet works. Her main opposition figures to come from Rock U Up, a winner of four straight, and the speedy Page Springs, who won this race by seven lengths a year ago. ◗ Rockin Home and Deadly Black Eagle head a field of 11 in the 2-year-old male division of the Arizona Breeders Futurity. Trained by David Van Winkle, Rockin Home added blinkers and easily won his trial for this by 5 1/4 lengths Nov. 6, earning a 71 Beyer Speed Figure. Jorge Carreno, who was up that day, keeps the call. Deadly Black Eagle, trained by McFarlane, has won 3 of his last 4, including taking his trial as the 3-5 favorite here Nov. 6. Jake Barton keeps the call. ◗ Lazy Daisy May looms as the heavy favorite among a field of 12 in the 2-year-old filly division of the Arizona Breeders Futurity. Trained by Molly Pearson, Lazy Daisy May comes off a romping 5 1/4-length win in the ATBA Sales Stakes here Oct. 19, her second win in three starts. She’ll be ridden by Geovanni Franco. Her main rival may be My Fine Lady, who finished second to Lazy Daisy May in the ATBA Sales Stakes but won her prior start by 8 1/4 lengths. She also won an allowance race by 4 3/4 lengths here Nov. 9. Scott Stevens again has the mount.
