Turf Cup draws full field plus three

Fourteen 3-year-olds are set to match up on Saturday at Colonial Downs in the $1 million Colonial Turf Cup, the first leg in a series sponsored by Colonial that promises a total of $5 million in purse and bonus money to any horse that can win four grass stakes.

Stream Cat, a multiple stakes winner on the turf for trainer Patrick Biancone, was made the favorite in the 1 3/16-mile Turf Cup after a post-position draw on Monday. Stream Cat will start from post 2 and will be ridden by the apprentice Julien Leparoux.

Another 13 horses - including stakes winners Showing Up and Go Between - drew into the oversubscribed field. Three other horses are on the also-eligible list.

The Colonial Turf Cup was first run last year as a $500,000 race. Restricted to 3-year-olds, the race is the first leg in a series called the Grand Slam of Grass, which is now the richest bonus series in U.S. racing.

The second leg of the series is the $1 million Virginia Derby at Colonial on July 15, followed by the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park and the $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4.

Showing Up's Colonial start will be his first since finishing sixth in the Kentucky Derby behind stablemate Barbaro, and his first start on turf. The Derby was Showing Up's first career loss. Trainer Barclay Tagg has recently been working Showing Up over the grass at Belmont Park.

Go Between, trained by Bill Mott, was second behind Stream Cat in the Crown Royal American Turf at Belmont Park on May 5, beaten just a neck. Go Between won the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream earlier this year and has never been out of the money in six starts.

Filling out the field is International Cat, Outperformance, Roman Dynasty, Prime Diamond, Lewis Michael, Rock Lobster, Unbridled Behavior, Can't Beat It, Yate's Black Cat, Chin High, and Kip Deville. Sir Classic Chris, Hunting Print, and Proudinsky are the also-eligibles.

* Also on Monday, six horses were drawn into the field of the $200,000 All Along Breeders' Cup Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on the grass for fillies and mares. The field includes Film Maker, the winner of the All Along last year; Latice, the winner of the 2004 French Oaks; and Wend, a multiple stakes winner on the grass.

Joint Aspiration, Art Fan, and Humoristic complete the field.
