LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Single 6 jackpot carryover of $261,677 awaits horseplayers when a four-day race week begins at Churchill with an eight-race Thursday program. The 20-cent bet will span races 3-8 and include both allowances on the card. Those co-features both are scheduled for the turf course. Race 3 is a $91,000 third-level allowance in which Sassy Little Lila and Stave could be favored in a compact field of fillies and mares. Race 6 is an $89,000 second-level sprint in which Blackout could take some beating for Peter Miller, who has a sizable string in Kentucky for the first time this spring. The Single 6 pool has not been swept by a solo winner since early in the meet. It was overshadowed Sunday by the late pick five, which drew more than $800,000 in wagers when a barrage of longshots Saturday left a carryover of nearly $100,000. One of those big-priced winners was Change of Control ($73.80), who rallied late to upset the $98,350 Mamzelle for trainer Michelle Lovell. Lou Cap the main event An interesting lineup of older horses is expected when entries are drawn Wednesday for the highlight of the coming weekend at Churchill, the Grade 3, $100,000 Louisville Handicap on Saturday. Among those whose connections said they intended to enter in the 1 1/2-mile turf race are Hot Springs, Nessy, Soglio, Strike the Flag, and Vettori Kin. Vettori Kin, trained by Kenny McPeek, has gone winless in five starts since capturing the 2018 Louisville by 2 1/2 lengths. The 6-year-old Brazilian-bred most recently was fifth in the Elkhorn last month at Keeneland. The 82nd running of the Louisville will anchor an 11-race card that will be run in its entirety prior to the simulcast of the Preakness from Pimlico. ◗ In keeping with a recent trend on this circuit, five names are within two wins of the top spot in the spring-meet jockey standings. Gabriel Saez and Ricardo Santana Jr. are tied for the lead with 10 wins apiece, followed closely by James Graham (nine) and Corey Lanerie and Tyler Gaffalione (eight each). Florent Geroux led the Keeneland spring meet with 15 wins, with six other riders within two wins. Among trainers, Steve Asmussen leads the Churchill spring meet in both wins (9) and starts (31). ◗ Brilliant Racing, a partnership venture begun last year by Churchill simulcast host Joe Kristufek and friends, celebrated its first victory Saturday when Eskenforit captured a $20,000 maiden-claiming race by 8 1/2 lengths. The 3-year-old gelding is trained by Steve Margolis.
