Truro Raceway: Thirteen not unlucky for Woodmere Stealdeal
Woodmere Stealdeal capped off a 13-for-13 freshman campaign in the Canadian Maritimes with a 1:54 1/5 track record victory in a C$15,000 Maritime Breeders division for 2-year-old male pacers this afternoon at Truro Raceway in Nova Scotia.
Driven by Marc Campbell, Woodmere Stealdeal pressed on around Bettim Again (Redmond Doucet) after the 27 3/5 opening quarter and maintained command through a 56 1/5 half and a 1:26 three-quarters. Bettim Again tipped to the outside in the lane and chipped into Woodmere Stealdeal's margin, but not enough as the undefeated gelding by Steelhead Hanover held sway to win by a half a length.
The time of 1:54 1/5 lowered the previous track record for the division by a second and four-fifths.
Trained by Danny Romo for owners Kevin Dorey and Robert Sumarah, Woodmere Stealdeal has earned C$68,646 to go with his unblemished status. At C$22,500, he was the highest-priced yearling sold at last year's Atlantic Classic Sale and was bred by Prince Edward Island's Woodmere Farms.
The track record for a rookie pacing filly and pacing colt also were lowered during the card with Aspoonfulofsugar, a daughter of Rollwithitharry, clocking a 1:56 1/5 mile in her C$15,000 Maritime Breeders flight for driver Dale Spence, trainer Joseph Baxter, and owners Jennifer Baxter, Sean Baxter, Trish Hardy, and Matthew Williams, and Rotten Ronnie, a colt by Maliciious, going 1:56 1/5 in a C$15,000 Maritime Breeders test for Doucet and trainer Lennan MacIsaac. Doucet also co-owns Rotten Ronnie with Andy Stewart.
Atlantic Breeders Crown champion Tobins Brownie, a filly by Stonebridge Terror, wrapped up the stakes winners on Sunday as she was a 1:58 victor in her C$15,000 Maritime Breeders contest for driver David Dowling, trainer Jonah Moase, and owners James Quinn, Carl Peterson, and Amy-Katherine Lakie.
