Trump My Record overcomes poor start to head Heritage Place Derby qualifiers
Trump My Record, the champion 2-year-old gelding of 2019, overcame a poor start to win a division of the Heritage Place Derby trials Sunday at Remington Park, setting the fastest qualifying time for the $248,000 final on May 30.
Trump My Record ($3) broke slowly and closed more than a length in the final 200 yards to reach the front in the final strides, winning the 400-yard race by a head over Uncle Eds Idea.
Ridden for the first time by leading rider James Flores, Trump My Record was timed in 19.544 seconds in his first start since a win in the $904,631 Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park last November.
“He was just so quiet and calm in the warmup that he just broke slow,” Flores said in a text message Monday. “He hadn’t run since last year, so I think this race will sharpen him a bunch.”

Trained by Jose Sanchez III for Crown Horse Racing, Trump My Record has won 9 of 11 starts and earned $796,937.
Trump My Record, who will be a heavy favorite in the Heritage Place Derby, won the most productive of five trials. The second through fourth-place finishers from that division – Uncle Eds Idea, Mr Dillard, and A Painted Dynasty – qualified for the final.
The 10 fastest qualifiers, regardless of finishing positions, earned berths in the final.
Other qualifiers were Relentless Gun, winner of the second trial; Inaugurator and Jesse D, the first two finishers of the third trial; Jess B One and Apollitical J Julia, the first two finishers of the fourth trial; and Jess My Hocks, winner of the fifth trial.
The May 30 program is the closing night of the winter-spring Quarter Horse meeting.
