Truly Quality is in the midst of a two-month break after he finished sixth of seven as the 11-10 favorite in the Grade 3 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 8, a loss that ended a streak of three stakes wins. “I sent him back to Florida for a break,” trainer Jonathan Thomas said on Thursday. Thomas said that Truly Quality’s closing style was ineffective in the San Marcos Stakes at 1 1/4 miles. The three consecutive stakes wins last summer and fall were at distances ranging from 1 3/8 miles to 1 1/2 miles on turf. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Especially on the turf course at Santa Anita, you can’t do that. “It seemed like a good time to give him a break. We’ll start training in earnest sometime in April, and try to find a race in May.” Later this year, Thomas hopes Truly Quality will be good enough to start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 1. The Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup at 1 1/2 miles at Del Mar later in the fall is another option. Truly Quality, owned by Augustin Stable, won the 2024 Hollywood Turf Cup in his final start of the year. Thomas reported on Thursday that Mouffy, the winner of the Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes at Woodbine last October, was recently retired and will be bred. Mouffy, owned by Augustin Stable, finished fifth by three-quarters of a length in the Grade 3 Robert Frankel Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 27 in her final start. “She put together a good résumé and it was time,” Thomas said. Mouffy, a 6-year-old mare by Uncle Mo, is a half-sister to the 5-year-old Truly Quality, who is by Quality Road. Mouffy won 5 of 17 starts and earned $420,193. Aside from the Dance Smartly Stakes, Mouffy won the 2023 Ellis Park Turf Stakes. The Augustin-Thomas team has Rashmi and Tirupati scheduled to run in Saturday’s Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf at Santa Anita. On March 15, the stable plans to run Mrs. Astor in the Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes, a $100,000 race for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles. Mrs. Astor won the Grade 3 Red Carpet Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 24 and the Frankel Stakes in her final two starts of 2024. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
