Truely Quick survives inquiry to win Cavonnier Juvenile
SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Truely Quick ($6.60), who won his racing debut over the track July 31, survived a inquiry over a late bumping incident in the stretch in winning the $65,405 Cavonnier Juvenile at the Sonoma County Fair on Sunday.
Truely Quick, a George Schmitt and Phil Lebherz homebred, broke alertly under jockey Ricardo Gonzalez. Gonzalez didn’t press his advantage and let stablemate Lucky Fame take the lead down the backstretch while sitting just off him.
Truely Quick challenged his stablemate on the turn and led as the field turned for home.
Stand and Salute, who was making his debut, moved up on the turn from a three-wide position and put his head in front at the eighth pole, but Truely Quick kept to his task while drifting out and brushing before bumping his rival.
Truely Quick kept going, pulling clear by 1 3/4 lengths, winning the six-furlong race in 1:12.12. Stand and Salute was four lengths in front of third-place Naomi’s Gift.
“My horse broke sharp, but I didn’t want the lead so I sat right off [Lucky Fame],” said Gonzalez. “When I asked him in the lane, he really took off.”
Truely Quick, trained by Jeff Bonde, earned $41,450 for Schmitt and Lebherz, increasing his earnings to $56,800.
