ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Truebelieve and Red River Rebel, who are atop the point standings in the Woodbine Turf Sprint Series, will meet again in the third leg on Thursday. The 6 1/2-furlong main turf event is a $25,000 starter allowance with a $40,000 claiming option, and Red River Rebel is the lone entrant in for the tag. Truebelieve earned 10 of his 11 points in the series when taking the opening leg at 24-1 going five furlongs on the inner turf. He subsequently ran sixth in a first-level allowance and was a well-beaten 11th most recently in the middle leg. Eswan Flores will ride him again for trainer Ravendra Raghunath. Red River Rebel, a restricted stakes winner during his formative years, is having another productive meet and has accumulated 10 points. The 6-year-old was claimed for $40,000 by trainer Marty Drexler in August 2023 and has won twice this year, most recently by a head over six furlongs on the main turf in the second leg of the series on Aug. 16. Normally a closer, Red River Rebel dueled for the lead along the rail most recently in a conditioned allowance/optional claimer on the Tapeta before tiring to finish second while earning his third 85 Beyer Speed Figure of the year. He was demoted from first to second by disqualification for interference three starts back in an allowance/optional claimer. He lost a heartbreaker in the middle leg of the series and is coming off another second, which was to the favored Saratoga shipper Outlaw Kid in the Vice Regent Stakes for Ontario-breds. Apprentice Da-Sean Gaskin stays aboard Forester’s Fortune for trainer Rodney Barrow. Rat Portage began slowly before going four wide on the turn en route to a sixth-place finish in the second leg. The late-bloomer was previously third behind reigning Canadian champion sprinter Patches O’Houlihan in the Pink Lloyd Stakes for Ontario-sired stock on the Tapeta. Jason Hoyte retains the mount for trainer Sylvester Oliverre, who is having a career year. Cotton was claimed for $47,500 from his penultimate start in July by trainer Mike Wright Jr., who sent him out to finish a wide fifth in the middle leg while 3 1/4 lengths behind Red River Rebel. Garafoli is taking on older rivals after running competitively in the Ontario Sired Heritage Series for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds. He defeated nonwinners-of-two opposition over five furlongs on the inner course in the best of his three turf outings in August. Rounding out the first race field are Told It All and Souped Up.
