True Cinder looks best in Emerald Necklace
Mygirlfriday and Pyrite Slew have the only wins among six Ohio-accredited 2-year-old fillies signed up for Saturday’s $75,000 Emerald Necklace Stakes at Thistledown. But considering that they were both trounced twice by True Cinder since recording their debut victories, True Cinder should go favored in the six-furlong stakes restricted to fillies foaled in Ohio and sired by a stallion standing in the state.
Fourth against maidens in her debut, True Cinder showed some ability when she rallied from seventh to finish second, beaten a head, at 30-1 odds in the 5 1/2-furlong Miss Ohio at Thistledown on July 23. She then was third of nine in the six-furlong Tah Dah at Belterra Park in August. Her paired-up Beyer Speed Figures of 48 are easily the best in Saturday’s field.
Pyrite Slew, from the barn of leading trainer Jeff Radosevich, won her career debut in June but then was beaten more than 10 lengths by True Cinder in the Miss Ohio and Tah Dah.
Similarly, Mygirlfriday defeated open-company maidens in her debut in July but regressed when 10th of 14 in the Miss Ohio and last of nine in the Tah Dah.
Funny Morning hasn’t recorded a Beyer higher than 28 in four career starts. The remaining two entrants, Diva’s Kitten and Shes My Girl, have yet to earn a positive Beyer in a combined three outings.
