Trooper John takes Getty on six-win day for trainer Rycroft
Trooper John was one of six winners trainer Tim Rycroft had on the Saturday card at Northlands Park, where the horse was always prominent for a 1 3/4-length win over Killin Me Smalls in the $50,000 Don Getty. It was another 7 1/4 lengths back in third to Royal Warrior.
The Don Getty was a 1 1/16-mile handicap for 3-year-olds and up. It was one of eight races on the card.
Trooper John ($3.90) tracked the pace through fractions of 24.42 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.80 for the half-mile before moving to the lead through six furlongs in 1:13.28. He proceeded to cover the distance on a track rated “good” in 1:44.60.
Rigo Sarmiento was aboard for Rycroft.
Trooper John is a son of Colonel John. He was winning the seventh stakes race of his career Saturday and is owned by Rivers Edge Racing Stable. Trooper John has now won eight of 15 starts and earned $212,854.
