Triple Chelsea delivers as favorite in Unbridled Sidney
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Triple Chelsea needed every yard of the Churchill Downs turf course Saturday when along in the final couple of jumps to nail Morticia in the $71,000 Unbridled Sidney.
Ridden by Adam Beschizza, Triple Chelsea was ahead of just a couple of rivals when the real running began in the five-furlong dash, but her torrid outside run carried her past Excessivespending, then Morticia, in the shadow of the wire. The winner paid $4 as the favorite in a field of nine fillies and mares after finishing in 56.23 seconds over a firm course. Triple Chelsea earned a 94 Beyer Speed Figure.
Joe Sharp trains Triple Chelsea, a 5-year-old mare by Hat Trick, for Brad Grady. Triple Chelsea now has won nine of 21 career starts, with four of her last five races, all in ungraded turf-sprint stakes, resulting in victory as she continues her ascent in this niche.
“It didn’t go exactly to plan,” Beschizza said, “but luckily her class shone through.”
Morticia, the 8-5 second choice, was prominent throughout under Brian Hernandez Jr., putting away Justa Lady, then fending off Excessivespending before being nipped by Triple Chelsea.
The $2 exacta (3-9) paid $8.20, the $1 trifecta (3-9-10) returned $24.20, and the 10-cent superfecta (3-9-10-8) was worth $14.49.
