Saturday, September 20 Cotillion - Parx UNTAPABLE firmly maintained her position at the top of the 3-year-old filly division with a hard-fought victory in her first start since her defeat against the boys in the Haskell. As in the Haskell, Untapable was running against the grain of a strong rail and speed bias (Bayern, her Haskell conqueror, used the bias to win the Pennsylvania Derby in the next race on the card). Rosie Napravnik wisely kept Untapable close to the pace, not far from frontrunners Jojo Warrior and Cassatt. She angled out to the three path coming to the quarter pole and looked ready to blow by but lugged in hard entering the stretch and then had to be kept busy to maintain her margin to the wire. SWEET REASON, who broke through the gate prior to the start, kept track of the winner, traveling smoothly on the rail and was also angled out for the drive, but had just a bit too much ground to make up and was outfinished to the wire. Still, it was an impressive two-turn performance and bodes well for her chances should she be pointed for the Distaff. Though there was a pronounced speed and rail bias, JO JO WARRIOR acquitted herself well, cranking out stiff fractions (faster than Bayern in the Derby) and holding her ground. LITTLE ALEXIS turned in a decent effort in just her fourth start, rallying against the grain of the track and beaten just four lengths against quality competition. CASSATT folded after contesting the early lead. Pennsylvania Derby - Parx As he did in the Haskell, BAYERN made good use of his speed on a bias-aided track and led his Pennsylvania Derby rivals on a merry chase. Even on a fair track Bayern would have been tough catching being afforded pretty leisurely fractions. Still, he showed quality to defeat a double classic winner and an otherwise decent field by a wide margin in track-record time. TAPITURE didn’t have a straw in his path, angling wide into stretch and rallying into the void for the place. CANDY BOY gets points for rallying against the bias, circling from last to get the minor award. C J’S AWESOME broke sharply to try to engage the winner, but could not match strides early and weakened late to settle for a dead heat with NOBLE MOON. CALIFORNIA CHROME broke cleanly from his inside post but was tentatively handled by Espinoza when Bayern shot for the front. Subsequently he seemed uncomfortable in the pocket and was steadied lightly a few times down the backside. When Espinoza asked him for run when daylight became available into the stretch, he was empty. [bc_video_id:337191:] Gallant Bloom - Belmont ARTEMIS AGROTERA  followed her impressive Grade 1 score in the Ballerina with a knockout effort in the Gallant Bloom. Sent off at a prohibitive 2-5, Artemis Agrotera got away sluggishly from the gate and was kept well off a sizzling early pace set by La Verdad. Maragh sent her up four wide around the turn and was pushed farther out into the track by a rallying Willet entering the stretch. By the eighth pole, the leader was weakening from the wild early fractions. Artemis Agrotera was in full flight and got up in the last jump, once again confirming her status as one of the top female sprinters in the country and a top candidate for the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. LA VERDAD turned in an outstanding effort in defeat, and looked like a winner turning for home, with Jose Ortiz high in the saddle after seemingly cruising through a half in 43.78. However, she shortened stride badly in the final sixteenth and just couldn’t hold off the late charge of the winner while gamely holding the place. WILLET saved ground to the turn, angled out approaching the quarter pole and finished furiously but could match strides with the winner late in a good effort. MERRY MEADOW was perfectly placed behind the speed but lacked the necessary run in the late going.
