ELMONT, N.Y. – There are certainly no gimmes in Wednesday’s pick-six sequence at Belmont Park, which has a $500,310 carryover after the wager was not hit for three straight programs. Important to note there are only eight races Wednesday at Belmont, so the pick six will begin on race 3 (2:40 p.m. Eastern). Five of the six races in the sequence are scheduled for the turf, and the forecast calls for dry conditions Wednesday after there was a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday. Here’s a look at the tricky sequence: Race 3: The five horses who ran directly behind Abiding Star on May 19 are back in this same $40,000 claiming race scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf course. Mobridge, a horse for course, is the other runner in this field and goes first off the claim for Mertkan Kantarmaci. Of the runners from the May 19 race, I would use Golden Spear, who bobbled at the break of that May 19 race but with a cleaner start could be the speed in what looks to be a paceless race. Harv Won’t Tap goes first off the claim for Robert Falcone after finishing well May 19. Though Kantarmaci is 0 for 4 first time running horses he claimed from Danny Gargan, I have to use Mobridge based on his 8-for-17 record at Belmont. Race 4: In a sequence without a true single, many players could rely on Mutakatif as their stand-alone in this second-level allowance feature scheduled for six furlongs on turf. In his first start in the U.S. and first for Chad Brown, Mutakatif was beaten a head in a two-turn mile allowance at Gulfstream on March 17. He has been rained out of a start a time or two, most recently last Friday. The cut back to six furlongs should be a plus. “I had him in going seven originally, which is what I really want to do with him, but I’m not going to pass up this race. He really needs to run and he might very well be effective at six,” Brown said. “I’d rather keep him one turn. The layout of this course should suit him much better than Gulfstream.” Discretionary Marq, who is 4 for 7 over Belmont’s turf course, makes his first start for Falcone and first since last November. Race 5: Crypto Gold was disqualified from a win for maiden $40,000 claiming when she bumped with Quality Choice, who finished third that day and has since came back to win. Crypto Gold gets a rider change to Luis Saez, who won 12 races here over four days last week. I would also use Deft, who drops some in class after finishing third for $75,000 claiming 11 days ago, and Whiskey Is My Wine, who was fourth in the May 11 race from which Crypto Gold was disqualified. Race 6: Not really enamored with the four who have run, so I’m going to rely on first-time starters All Guns Blazing for Jeremiah Englehart and Assault Breaker for Jonathan Thomas. Englehart scratched All Guns Blazing on Sunday to keep him away from Cleon Jones, who struck out as the 4-5 favorite. Englehart said All Guns Blazing has shown speed in the morning, though he added that he thinks the horse could ultimately be better suited to the turf. Assault Breaker has a win-early pedigree. Both his sire, Street Boss, and his dam, Ouchy Night, won their debut. In addition, Assault Breaker’s half-siblings Wild About Harry and Sigalert also won at first asking. Race 7: Sadie Lady has been a beaten favorite the last two times at this first-level New York-bred allowance condition. While I would use her, I’d also use Jaded Lady, who was fourth at this condition level going seven furlongs May 24. Coming off that lengthy layoff, she showed more speed than Englehart preferred. “I’d much rather her be a bit more relaxed early on,” Englehart said. “First race, being fresh, might have had her closer and a little bit more rank than I’d have liked.” Itsakeyper intrigues as a closer at a price. Race 8: If you’re alive going into the last leg, a full field of New York-bred maiden $40,000 claimers going six furlongs on turf awaits. Mz Seb Pat ran well to be second first time at this level for David Donk and picks up Irad Ortiz Jr. as Manny Franco serves a suspension. Gunboat Diplomacy is in for a tag first time for Bruce Brown, who has had a pretty decent meet. Jose Ortiz replaces Eric Cancel in the saddle.
