Tribal Storm blows 'em away in stretch of Lost in the Fog

Tribal Storm was last out of the gate and the last runner into the lane, but he was first to the finish line in the $60,125 Lost in the Fog on Monday at Golden Gate Fields.
Odds-on Wellabled, whose five career victories, including three stakes wins, had all come on synthetic tracks, broke sharply and took the lead in the six-furlong Tapeta race for older horses. He outraced Anyportinastorn and defending champ Quick and Silver early, and the three never changed position relative to one another. Wellabled wound up second, edging Anyportinastorm by a head with Quick and Silver another three-quarters of a length back.
While those three were up front, Tribal Storm and jockey Irving Orozco were last down the backstretch, 7 1/2 lengths in back of the leader. They were still 6 1/2 lengths back at the quarter pole.
Tribal Storm covered the final eighth of a mile in a shade under 11.40 seconds to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:08.71. He paid $42.60.
“He ran a pretty good race,” said winning trainer Ed Moger Jr. “I’m happy with the time.
“I think Irving’s got a real good feel for the horse. He never makes him do something he doesn’t want, and he got a nice seam in the lane today.”
Tribal Storm, a Curt and Lila Lanning homebred by Papa Clem, was third in the California Derby, El Camino Real Derby (via disqualification), and the Echo Eddie last spring in consecutive races as a 3-year-old. He won the Harris Farms Stakes later in the year.
The victory in the Lost in the Fog was worth $39,450, lifting his bankroll to $259,034.
