Tri-State foes meet again in West Virginia Futurity
The second-, third-, and fourth-place finishers from the Tri-State Futurity will be rematched in the West Virginia Futurity for statebreds at Charles Town on Saturday night.
Candy Man One disappointed as the 13-10 favorite in the Tri-State and was beaten 7 1/2 lengths by victorious John Barleycorn. He raced close to the pace in that seven-furlong race, bid for the lead on the backstretch, then tired.
Although the West Virginia Futurity is the same distance as the Tri-State, Candy Man One has a good chance to turn the tables on runner-up I Need You and third-place Laso the Man. Candy Man One looks to have the best early speed in the Futurity and jockey Antonio Lopez may go directly to the front for trainer James W. Casey.
A new player in the field is Jacky's Man, who enters off a come-from-behind maiden victory for Casey. In his prior start, Jacky's Man finished third in the Vincent Moscarelli on Breeders' Classic night.
Laso the Man, who finished fourth in the Moscarelli for Casey prior to the Tri-State, is cross-entered in a statebred maiden race at Charles Town on Friday.
I Need You, a confirmed closer who races for John Casey, will have to again rely on his late run Saturday night. Although he is still a maiden, he will be making his fourth consecutive stakes start.
The six-horse field is rounded out by Poseidon's Prize, a first-time starter trained by Ollie Figgins III, and Sterling General, who finished a well-beaten sixth in the Tri-State while making his career debut.
