Trevor McCarthy breaks collarbone in spill, out at least through 2022

Barbara D. Livingston Trevor McCarthy is all smiles returning to the winner's circle aboard Weyburn, the 46-1 upset winner of last year's Gotham Stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Jockey Trevor McCarthy will be sidelined through at least the end of 2022 after suffering a broken collarbone as well as a pelvic injury after being involved in a spill during the running of Friday’s sixth race at Aqueduct.

McCarthy stayed overnight at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and was hopeful of being discharged sometime Saturday, according to his agent Joey Migliore.

Migliore confirmed the broken collarbone and said while McCarthy did suffer a pelvic injury the extent of it is not yet clear.

“We’re looking to see a specialist on Monday to get more information and detail,” Migliore said Saturday.

McCarthy on Friday was aboard Ever Summer, who, approaching the quarter pole of the turf allowance race, was making an outside move. Jalon Samuel, aboard Rhombique, brought his horse off the rail, creating a chain reaction in which several horses were carried out. Ever Summer wound up clipping heels with Unruly Julie, another horse who was impacted by Samuel’s actions.

Ever Summer unseated McCarthy and then appeared to land on the jockey. Ever Summer got up and jogged through the lane before being apprehended by an outrider. Christophe Clement, the trainer of Ever Summer, reported that the 3-year-old filly was uninjured.

McCarthy lay on the turf before being attended by on-site emergency medical technicians. He was strapped to a backboard and carried off the course - under two sets of rails - and brought to an awaiting ambulance on the main track. McCarthy was brought to nearby Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where the broken collar bone was confirmed.

Rhombique, who finished second under Samuel, was disqualified by the stewards and placed ninth.

Monday would have marked exactly one year since McCarthy began riding in New York full time following a 2021 summer stint in Southern California. McCarthy finished second in the Aqueduct winter standings with 54 winners. For calendar year 2022, McCarthy has ridden 105 winners on the New York Racing Association circuit, sixth best.

Overall, in 2022, McCarthy has won 113 races from 979 mounts and his horses have earned $8,829,488. In May, he captured his first career Grade 1 victory aboard Highland Chief in the Man o’ War at Belmont Park.

“It was a great year before it got cut short at the end here,” Miglore said. “We’ll grind our way back."
