Trevilion cruises to Gold Cup victory

Trevilion gave trainer Victor Arceneaux a sweep of the first two stakes of the Delta Downs meet Saturday night, when he rolled by four lengths over Mageez in the $100,000 Gold Cup.
The win came one night after Arceneaux sent out Mariah’s Galaxy to capture the $100,000 Magnolia. The races were the first two stakes of the Delta meet that opened Tuesday.
Trevilion ($9.60) sat just off the pace set by Just Stormin, who took the field of Louisiana-breds through fractions of 23.46 seconds for the opening quarter, 48.15 for the half-mile, and 1:13.25 for six furlongs. Trevilion took over from there, going on to cover the mile on a fast track in 1:39.85.
Diego Saenz rode the winner for Tigertail Ranch.
Tigertail Ranch also is the breeder of Trevilion, who is a son of Lone Star Special. He has now won four of seven starts and earned $143,250. Trevilion was picking up his first stakes victory in the Gold Cup.
Jimi's a Star finished third in the Gold Cup, a head behind Mageez.
