Treve takes on males in Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud

Steve Andersen|Jun 26, 2015

Treve already has earned a place in racing history as the winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris in 2013 and 2014. On Sunday, the 5-year-old Treve will start at a racecourse a matter of miles from Longchamp when she runs in the $448,000 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud against males.

The Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, run at 1 1/2 miles on turf, will be the second start of the year for Treve. She won the Group 2 Prix Corrida Stakes at Saint-Cloud by four lengths May 29.

Owned by Al Shaqab Racing and trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, Treve has won 7 of 10 starts in her career. She is unbeaten in two starts at Saint-Cloud, having won an allowance race there in 2013. Thierry Jarnet will ride Treve, who is by Motivator.

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud will provide a stern test. Treve faces Dolniya and Flintshire, who were first and second in the $6 million Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates on March 28 and second and third behind Pether’s Moon in the Group 1 Coronation Cup in England on June 6.

Andre Fabre trains Flintshire, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita last November. In the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Fabre also starts the promising colt Manatee, who won the Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly on May 31.

◗ In Ireland, Legatissimo, the winner of the Group 1 English 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 3, will have her first start against older fillies and mares in Sunday’s $280,000 Pretty Polly Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf at The Curragh.

Trained by David Wachman for the Coolmore team of Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Legatissimo was second as the 5-2 favorite in the Group 1 English Oaks at Epsom on June 5, losing by a head to Qualify, a 50-1 outsider.

The field for the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes includes Brooch, who is undefeated in four starts, including the Group 2 Lanwades Stud Stakes at The Curragh on May 23, and Pleascach, the winner of the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas on May 24 and the runner-up in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 18.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien starts Diamondsandrubies, who won the Cheshire Oaks in England on May 6 and was fourth in the Epsom Oaks.
