Trendsetter, a 2-year-old gelding trained by Ben Colebrook, made the last move a winning one in the $100,000 Hickory Tree Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday. The deep closer has more learning to do, but he still powered home to a three-quarter-length victory.  “He was slow to switch leads again today,” Colebrook said. “The penny’s not dropped totally, but he’s doing it right now just because he’s a bit better than the horses he’s running against.”  Colebrook’s precocious gelding is now undefeated in two starts against familiar Virginia-certified rivals, making a clear statement early in his local juvenile campaign.  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Five horses in the Hickory Tree’s field of six raced against one another in a state-restricted maiden special weight at Colonial on July 10, when Trendsetter closed from eighth to win his debut by 1 1/4 lengths. Entering his first stakes race as the only winner, he took care of business in similar fashion and paid $4 to win.  Trendsetter had to overcome an awkward start in his debut, but Colebrook was clearly comfortable letting Trendsetter run well off the pace again on Saturday. While Cool Customer jumped out to a three-length lead through an opening quarter-mile in 22.16, Trendsetter was 8 1/2 lengths behind in last.  Trainer Mike Stidham said earlier this week that he didn’t want Cool Customer, third-place finisher behind Trendsetter last month, to be too intent on the front end this time around. There was clearly little to be done, however, as the headstrong runner blazed through a half-mile in 45.60 and quit in the stretch.  While stalking colts Power Grid and State Conceal were quick to pounce on the flagging front-runner, Trendsetter and jockey Ben Curtis were flying from the back of the pack with plenty of ground to make up turning for home.   With a considerably faster horse under him in the closing stages, Curtis seemed prepared to make a bold move past the top flight when Trendsetter lugged in without a clear path. Curtis had to bring him back to the outside under a hand ride, and despite losing some momentum while straightening out, he still overpowered the field and completed the 5 1/2-furlong sprint in 1:04.88.  “It got closer than you would’ve wanted for a second, but I think it’s just his greenness,” Colebrook said. “He was green in his first race, green in his second race. Once he figures things out, hopefully there’s some improvement.”  Trainer John Robb had the second- and third-place finishers in the race, as Power Grid kept on well to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of G Q Worthy, who picked up the pieces along the rail and just missed in what could have been his fourth straight runner-up finish.  Colebrook said that it will be an intuitive move to give Trendsetter more distance going forward, as he considers the 5 1/2 furlongs too sharp for him. The trainer is also considering the turf at some point, which could bring him to Kentucky Downs if he doesn’t return to the Virginia-certified ranks at Colonial next time out.  Keswick Stakes Just Philtored, a 2-year-old filly trained by Mike Trombetta, outlasted fellow debut winner Slewperstitus to win the $100,000 Keswick Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday. The filly had not run since moving barns through a private sale in May, but she delivered again to remain undefeated in her second start.  “I was a little nervous there towards the end,” Trombetta said. “[Slewperstitus] was making up ground on us, but fortunately, the wire got there before that other horse did.”  Three fillies in the Virginia-certified field of seven scratched from the Keswick on Saturday, leaving three debut winners and 32-1 longshot Snow Bella to duke it out in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint.   Smooch Up, a last-out winner at Presque Isle Downs trained by Ron Potts Jr., broke well along the rail to take a 1 1/2-length early lead through a quarter-mile in 22.76. She didn’t last long on the far turn, however, and quickly faded back to third, allowing Just Philtored to take a two-length lead in the stretch after a half-mile in 45.67.   Jockey Mychel Sanchez had Just Philtored well in hand at the top of the stretch, but the filly’s race was just getting started. Slewperstitus, the even-money co-favorite trained by Robert Bailes, quickly moved past Smooch Up and began gaining on the new leader.  Just Philtored tried to outkick her closing rival, but Slewperstitus continued moving forward under jockey J.G. Torrealba and drew alongside to challenge for the win in her final strides. She got within striking distance but ultimately couldn’t get past, coming up short by a neck.  “She ran very well,” Trombetta said of Just Philtored. “I tried to have her ready for this thing without leaning on her too hard. It just worked out just good enough.”  By the time they reached the wire, the favored pair had opened up an eight-length lead on third-place finisher Smooch Up, who was 21 3/4 lengths ahead of Snow Bella. Just Philtored completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.82, paying $4.20 to win. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
