Trejo, Alvarez poised for big night at Delta Downs
Trainer Martin Trejo and jockey David Alvarez could have a memorable night Saturday at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. They have the fastest qualifiers in the two richest races on a program of seven Quarter Horse stakes for Louisiana-breds.
Trejo and Alvarez will team with I Am Intriguing in the featured $645,645 Lee Berwick Futurity, the centerpiece of the meet and a restricted Grade 1. They also will join forces with Allizoom in the $217,545 Delta Downs Derby, a restricted Grade 2. Other races making up the closing-night card that is worth more than $1.2 million include:
• The Louisiana Classic, a 440-yard race for 3-year-olds and up led by recent Grade 2 winner McM Dashmaster.
• The $60,000 Flashy Hemp, a 400-yard race for fillies and mares that serves as the first start of the year for The Game Cartel, a Grade 2 winner last out at Fair Grounds.
• The $60,000 Louisiana Juvenile, a 350-yard race that drew McM Fast Passage, a filly by the Storm Cat stallion Storm Passage.
I Am Intriguing emerged as the fastest qualifier for the Lee Berwick following a marathon card of trials at Delta on June 21. There were 14 set for the night, but the fifth race was declared a no-contest due to a starting-gate malfunction. I Am Intriguing was part of the field for the third race, and she rolled from sixth for a 1 3/4-length win. I Am Intriguing covered 350 yards in 17.43 seconds, her second trial win this meet at Delta.
I Am Intriguing will break from post 6 for owner Saul Dorado.
Louisiana Blue Bell, another filly in the Lee Berwick, was the second-fastest qualifier for the race. She won the seventh trial in 17.51 seconds by 1 1/4 lengths. She will break from post 10 on Saturday.
