Treasurethe Moment puts streak on the line in the Memsie Stakes

Steve Andersen|Aug 27, 2025

An eight-race winning streak is not enough to make Treasurethe Moment the favorite in Friday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia.

The race distance and a four-month layoff are two reasons Treasurethe Moment was 5-1 with bookmakers in early betting on Wednesday, behind Another Wil (3-1), Antino (4-1), and Fangirl (9-2).

A winner of 9 of 11 starts for trainer Matt Laurie, Treasurethe Moment has won at the Memsie distance of seven furlongs as recently as February at Caulfield, but she was particularly impressive in Group 1 races at 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 miles in the first two weeks of April, her most recent starts.

Treasurethe Moment is rated as a contender for Group 1 races at 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 miles such as the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in October.

Another Wil has not raced since he finished sixth by three-quarters of a length in a field of 20 in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney in April, one of the country’s toughest races at the distance. Trained by Ciaron Maher, Another Wil won the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes at seven furlongs at Caulfield in February, a victory that will hold significant appeal to bettors assessing the Memsie field.

Antino was fourth in the 2024 Memsie Stakes and won the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at a mile at Caulfield last October in his most recent start at the venue. Antino, who often runs as a closer, won the Group 1 Doomben Cup at 1 1/4 miles at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane in May in his last start.

Fangirl was scratched from the Group 1 Winx Stakes at seven furlongs at Randwick last weekend in favor of the Memsie, which will be her first start since a win in the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes at a mile at Randwick in April.

The field for the $488,100 Memsie has such depth that the last two winners of the race, Mr Brightside and Pinstriped, were being somewhat ignored in the early betting. Mr Brightside, who won the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at seven furlongs at Caulfield in February, has not raced since he finished last of 13 in the Group 1 Champions Mile in Hong Kong in April. Pinstriped was seventh of nine, beaten 3 1/4 lengths, at 20-1 after a wide trip in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes at seven furlongs at Caulfield on Aug. 16, his first start since a seventh in the Futurity Stakes.

The Memsie Stakes is part of a nine-race program that begins at 10:05 p.m. Eastern.
