Transient rallies for first stakes win in Powder Break

Transient burst to the lead in the later stages en route to a two-length win over Chick’s Shadow in the $75,000 Powder Break on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third to To Thyself B True.
The race was for fillies and mares on Tapeta. It was run over one-mile and 70 yards.
Transient ($4.40) was cutting back in distance from 1 1/2 miles for her first start since April and had one horse beat early as Empress Ellie and Midnight Bella took the field through an opening quarter in 24.79 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.54 for the half-mile.
Transient was situated on the rail down the backstretch, advanced steadily, and picked up the pace more on the final turn as Empress Ellie continued to lead through six furlongs in 1:12.55. Transient came into the stretch three wide, split horses in the stretch and covered the distance in 1:41.40.
“She settled really nice,” winning rider Tyler Conner told publicity at Gulfstream. “I was a little worried I was that far back, but when I asked her to do anything, she responded really well. The trip opened up really great.”
Saffie Joseph Jr. trains Transient for e Five Racing Thoroughbreds. The daughter of Sea the Stars was winning her first stakes after placing in three graded stakes in four graded appearances leading up to the Powder Break.
Transient has now won 3 of 14 starts for earnings of $246,589.
- Jockey Sonny Leon and Bluto’s Candy both escaped serious injury after the horse fell during the running of the fourth race Saturday. In the same race, apprentice Kenedy Berrugate registered his first U.S. win aboard Pluma Roja ($38.60), according to Gulfstream. He arrived at the South Florida track from his native Panama in June. Berrugate is a graduate of the Laffit Pincay Jr. Technical Jockey Training Academy in Panama.
- The Rainbow 6 jackpot will have a minimum guaranteed pool of $175,000 on Sunday. The 20-cent bet will run on races 4 through 9.
