DRF Staff|Dec 07, 2010

Marty McGee

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer Phil Thomas Jr. is resting comfortably and has been walking and talking after suffering a mild stroke Saturday morning at his Churchill Downs barn.

Thomas, 60, was rushed to a nearby hospital after collapsing in the barn during training hours. He was subsequently transferred to Norton Brownsboro, where he remained hospitalized Tuesday. Thomas said doctors informed him he may be discharged soon to begin rehabilitation treatment.

Thomas, who worked for eight years for the late Jim Eckrosh before beginning his training career in 1981, typically trains a handful of horses while also managing his Heritage Hill Farm in Finchville, Ky. His horses have won 225 races and earned more than $2.6 million.
