Trainer Rojas sentenced to 27 months in prison
Murray Rojas, the Penn National-based trainer who was found guilty two years ago of 14 counts of misbranding prescription drugs, was sentenced to 27 months in prison on Monday.
Rojas is scheduled to begin her sentence on June 3. The sentencing document issued by U.S. District Judge Silvia H. Rambo also states that Rojas will be on probation for two years following her jail time, in which she will not be able to participate in any horse industry activities without approval from her probation officer.
Rojas was convicted of the misbranding charges during a trial centered on charges that trainers and veterinarians routinely administered prohibited substances to racehorses on raceday at Penn National and altered vet records to hide the administrations. She was banned by Penn National after the guilty verdict was returned in a jury trial in 2017.
Rojas’s husband, Eduardo Rojas, continues to train. His activity picked up sharply after Murray became ensnared in the FBI investigation at Penn National that resulted in charges against his wife in 2015, but his starts have begun to dwindle over the past two years. This year, he has 19 starts with 1 win.
