The Mid-Atlantic-based trainer Kieron Magee will serve a 10-day suspension for the finding of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory Phenylbutazone in the post-race sample of Dat Dares Gold, who finished second in the third race at Aqueduct on Nov. 17. Bute, as the medication is known, is frequently used for lameness due to a soft-tissue issue, muscle soreness or bone and joint issues. Magee, who waived his right of appeal, will serve the suspension from Jan. 13-22. He was also fined $1,000. Dat Dares Gold was disqualified from second and ordered unplaced in the order of finish. His owners, Mark Moshe and Krakow Racing, had to forfeit the $5,600 second-place purse winnings. :: DRF New Year Sale: Save up to 50% on handicapping essentials - DRF Past Performances, Clocker Reports, and more! Magee, who runs primarily in Maryland, has run only seven horses at New York Racing Association tracks in his career. Magee is the fifth trainer to have a horse test positive for an overage of Bute at a NYRA track in the last few months. Gus Rodriguez, Jeffrey Englehart, Edmund Davis and Tom Morley each had Bute overages. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
