ARCADIA, Calif. – Steve Knapp, who ranked fifth in the trainer’s standings at the current Santa Anita meeting through Sunday, has been suspended 15 days from April 1 through 15 after one of the horses in his care did not undergo a mandatory soundness examination before its first workout last fall. The decision was published by Santa Anita stewards on Sunday. Racing board investigators filed a complaint against Knapp in January, stating that Truest of True began workouts at Santa Anita last November without a soundness examination following the colt’s arrival at the track in September. Truest of True had two workouts in November and one in January. Truest of True has not worked since then through Thursday. The penalty, which includes a $1,000 fine, covers three days of racing – from April 5-7. Santa Anita is not scheduled to race on the weekend of April 12-14 to allow a break between the winter-spring and spring portions of its marathon season, which runs from April 19 through June 16. In a separate ruling published on Sunday, Knapp, 67, was fined $500 after Nickle Nickle Nine did not have a training soundness examination last fall after returning to the racetrack in September for the first time since June. Horses that have been away from the track for more than 90 days are required to undergo such an exam before they are allowed to resume training, according to California Horse Racing Board rules. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
