Trainer Hamilton Smith goes 4 for 6 at Laurel Park
Trainer Hamilton Smith went 4 for 6 at Laurel Park on Sunday, winning with his first four starters on the card.
Smith's winners were True Cat ($4.40) in race 1, Queen of Schmooze ($4.20) in race 2, Scrap Copper ($9) in the fourth, and Stillsexyatsixty ($4) in race 5.
His starters in races 6 and 8 finished sixth and second.
The track was listed good for race 1, fast for race 2, and sloppy for races 4 and 5.
His winners were ridden by Alex Cintron, Edwin Gonzalez, Victor Carrasco, and Jerry Ortega. Race 5, which Ortega won, was an amateur riders' race. Ortega is an exercise rider for trainer John Servis.
Smith, 75, is a native of South Carolina who has long trained in Maryland. His brother, Franklin Smith, operates the Elloree Training Center in South Carolina.
In 2012, Smith won the Grade 3 Illinois Derby with Done Talking. He also won the Grade 3 Virginia Oaks in 2009 with Blind Date and the Grade 3 Violet at The Meadowlands in 2005 and 2007 with Humoristic.
Smith has 1,930 wins in his career and a 14 percent win average.
King Leatherbury has won five races in a day four times at a Maryland Jockey Club track. Leatherbury also had a six-win day.
In March, trainer Claudio Gonzalez won four races on a Laurel Park card.
