Trainer Dale Romans sued by brother

Jerry Romans, a former trainer, has filed a lawsuit alleging that his brother, the Eclipse Award-winning trainer Dale Romans, mismanaged horses he owned, according to multiple reports.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Jefferson Circuit Court in Louisville, Ky., according to the reports. Efforts to obtain the lawsuit were unsuccessful. Contacted on Thursday, Dale Romans would not comment.

The lawsuit alleges that Dale Romans had an agreement to train horses owned by his brother from 2004 to 2012. In 2012, the lawsuit states, Dale Romans “refused to enter” two horses owned by Jerry Romans in races. The suit states that the horses at the time had “revenue-generating talent,” according to the reports.

The lawsuit also alleges that Dale Romans did not get permission from his brother to enter a stakes-winning mare, Sassy Image, owned by Jerry Romans in a 2012 auction at Fasig-Tipton. The mare sold at the auction for $660,000. In addition, the suit alleges that Dale Romans bought a horse in the name of Jerry Romans without his approval.

The suit is seeking monetary damages for “actions detrimental” to Jerry Romans’s business interests.

Dale Romans won the 2012 Eclipse Award as top trainer.
