Trainer Broberg's wife lost at sea

The wife of leading trainer Karl Broberg was declared lost at sea Monday after she apparently fell from one of the top decks of a cruise ship early Friday morning, according to news reports.

Samantha Broberg, 33, was declared missing Friday afternoon from a Carnival cruise ship en route from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico. The cruise-ship company later said that video cameras recorded Broberg falling from the 10th deck of the ship after she sat on a railing and fell backward at approximately 2 a.m. Friday.

Broberg was traveling with a female companion, according to reports. Karl Broberg was not on the ship.

In a statement Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard said it had suspended the search for Samantha Broberg late Sunday night after covering more than 4,300 square miles along the ship’s route.

Based in Texas and frequently shipping throughout the Southeast, Karl Broberg has led the nation in wins for the past two years and has been in the top 10 among trainers by wins since shortly after obtaining his trainer’s license in 2009.
